Decide which days actually need a car
A car can help with a rural accommodation base or a day linking places that do not fit your bus connections, but it also creates a parking task at every stop. Sketch your itinerary first. For a day spent walking Valletta and crossing a harbour, compare the public-transport option before paying for a car that will mostly sit in a car park. For a rural village route, select a few stops with a known place to leave the vehicle. Malta drives on the left, as Transport Malta confirms. If that is unfamiliar, think carefully about your comfort with the driving itself rather than choosing solely on the rental headline price.
Read the agreement as a journey document
Ask the rental company to confirm driver eligibility, accepted licence documents, deposit arrangements, fuel policy, excess and what the cover excludes. Check its rules for taking the vehicle between Malta and Gozo, collection outside staffed hours and additional drivers. These are contract questions: an operator's answer for one car does not necessarily apply to another booking. Photograph the vehicle's condition with the company at collection and keep the handover record. Know whom to contact about a breakdown and how the company wants damage reported. Choose a size you can comfortably manoeuvre and make sure child seats or other required equipment are confirmed before travel, not merely requested in an unacknowledged note.
Treat access and parking as separate decisions
Transport Malta explains that Valletta has a camera-based Controlled Vehicular Access system that records entry and exit and calculates charges under its rules. Entering the charging area is not the same thing as obtaining a parking space. Ask the rental firm how charges and any administration fees are handled, and consult the current official information before driving in. Elsewhere, read local signs and restrictions instead of assuming an empty space is available. Do not block garages, church access or agricultural lanes. When a route becomes uncomfortable or unsuitable, return to a safe stopping point rather than pressing on because a navigation app suggests it. Leave extra time when returning a car before a flight or ferry, including fuel, inspection and the trip from the return location.
The useful details.
- Confirm licence eligibility and island-crossing terms with the rental firm.
- Valletta CVA access charging does not reserve a parking space.
- Keep the collection and return condition records.
