Before the flight
Save the full address of your accommodation, the check-in procedure and a contact number somewhere you can open without a connection. Plan the journey for the likely time you will leave the terminal, not the landing time printed on the ticket. Add room for passport procedures where applicable, luggage collection and finding the correct meeting point. If travelling with children, bulky luggage or access requirements, compare the practical boarding arrangements as well as the price. An apparently simple transfer can become difficult when it relies on an unplanned walk at the end.
Choosing your onward journey
Malta Public Transport publishes airport services, a journey planner and service alerts. Consult its current information before selecting a route: an older article with a familiar route number may not describe today’s network. Compare the total journey, including changes and the final walk, with a pre-arranged transfer or taxi. If booking a pickup, confirm where the driver will meet you, how flight delays are handled and the total charge. Use official airport signs and your booking confirmation to identify the service rather than accepting an unsolicited alternative.
Keep arrival day light
Make the first evening a short walk and a meal near your accommodation. Avoid a prepaid attraction that depends on an on-time flight and an immediate transfer. If you arrive after the advertised check-in period, obtain written arrival instructions before travelling. Check the next morning’s transport after you have settled in; there is little value in planning the whole island from the arrivals hall. On the return trip, work backwards from the airline and airport requirements and allow a separate travel buffer. A map’s estimated road journey is not a complete airport plan.
