Xwejni Bay: a coastal pause beside the salt landscape

Separate a visit to the small bay from a walk through the neighbouring salt-working landscape and make room for both.

Read the shoreline in sections

Xwejni is part of Gozo’s northern coast near Marsalforn and Qbajjar. The small bay, distinctive limestone and nearby salt pans belong to the same landscape but serve different purposes. A shore pause is not an invitation to walk across salt basins. Begin by identifying the ordinary public route and the areas that are being used for production.

Give the coast a little time

This is a good place to slow down and compare rock, water and the human geometry of the pans. Keep photography equipment and bags away from working edges. If you intend to swim, make that a separate decision based on conditions and local signs, not on the presence of somebody else in the sea. A dry-land visit is worthwhile in its own right.

Connect it to Marsalforn

A meal or promenade walk in Marsalforn makes a practical second anchor. Check the road distance and return arrangements rather than estimating a coastal walk from the map. The official Saltpans Walk is a substantially broader outing from Victoria. Use it when you want a walking day, not as a casual extension to an already full beach afternoon.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

The useful details.

  • Stay out of the working salt basins.
  • Allow time for the return to Marsalforn.
  • Keep dry-land viewing separate from swimming decisions.
