Xewkija and Nadur: two distinct village centres

A Gozo day built around the Rotunda, limestone craftsmanship and Nadur’s square, without turning it into a beach circuit.

Start with Xewkija’s landmark

Xewkija lies between Mġarr Harbour and Victoria and is identified by its large Rotunda, dedicated to St John the Baptist. Visit Gozo describes the twentieth-century church and the older stonework preserved in its Sculpture Museum. Those layers make a useful subject for a visit: look at the building as a working parish church and an example of island craftsmanship, rather than only as a dome to photograph. Ask about current visiting arrangements for the museum and any elevated viewing area; do not assume those follow the same access hours as the main church. Avoid repeating world-ranking claims about the dome, which are not necessary to appreciate it.

Give Nadur a separate chapter

Continue to Nadur for a different square and architectural setting. The parish church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, while Visit Gozo connects the nearby Ta’ Kenuna Tower with a nineteenth-century telegraph link between Malta and Gozo. Choose the centre for lunch and make an optional viewpoint stop only if the actual route works for your group. Nadur's surrounding bays are attractive but involve their own access and weather decisions. Adding Ramla, San Blas and Daħlet Qorrot would change this from a village day into a coast-and-transport day. Keep those for a separate plan if your priority is time in the settlements.

Prepare a realistic connection

Use the bus planner for the order of the villages rather than assuming a direct connection suits your arrival time. A taxi or arranged pickup can be useful for one leg, but agree the exact meeting point outside restricted or busy church areas. Plan around worship, weddings and local events with flexibility and respectful dress. If you need step-free access, ask each venue about the entrance and any optional upper section instead of relying on the size or modern appearance of the building. Carry water and leave time to sit down. For a Gozo day trip, protect the return journey to Mġarr by ending village sightseeing before the last comfortable connection. An overnight stay allows a slower evening meal, but still check which restaurants actually operate on your date.
