Choose a walk, not a line on a map
The official tourism walking resources include named routes in Malta and Gozo, from heritage trails to coastal outings. Use a complete route description and identify the start, finish, distance and return connection before setting out. An attractive photograph of a cliff does not establish a safe continuous path. Decide whether you want a town stroll, a short out-and-back walk or a longer countryside route. Those options require different time, footwear and preparation, even when they begin in the same locality.
Let the season shape the day
Spring and autumn often offer more comfortable walking opportunities than the hottest part of summer, but choose the actual day rather than relying on the month alone. Heat, wind and rain can change what is sensible. In hot conditions, shorten the outing and avoid making a long exposed route the centre of the day. After rain, consider surfaces and footing before committing to rural paths. A town or museum visit is a useful alternative when the coast is unpleasant; it is easier to enjoy the islands when the plan can change.
Respect the route and finish early
Carry water, sun protection, a charged phone and appropriate layers. Keep to established routes, do not take shortcuts through cultivated land and take litter away. Avoid exposed edges and leave enough daylight to return by a known route. If the walk finishes somewhere different from the start, check the transport before beginning rather than assuming a bus will arrive when you need it. Our guide is a planning framework, not navigation or a trail-condition report. Use current local information, assess your group’s abilities and shorten the walk when the conditions warrant it.
