Use the current registration guidance
The Department of Social Security explains that a Social Security Number identifies a person for contribution purposes and is issued once. Some Maltese identity-card series use the identity number itself, while other circumstances require a separate number. The important first question is whether you already have one and which route applies now. Do not submit several applications simply because an employer, bank and accommodation provider each ask for a different piece of paperwork.
Check the employer-led route
Since July 2025, an online Jobsplus Engagement Form can pass an employee’s or self-employed person’s details to Social Security for automatic issue of an eligible number. The current guidance says a Maltese identity number is required for that automatic route. If it is absent, apply through the department’s online application or a Servizz.gov hub. EU citizens not seeking a Maltese residence card also use the direct route. Ask the employer which details were submitted before making a duplicate request.
Keep the records consistent
Make sure names, identity details and contact information match across the documents. Store the registration confirmation with your employment records and use the official service if you do not know an existing number. Social Security registration does not by itself determine entitlement to a particular benefit; each benefit has conditions. When you later change jobs or contact details, check the appropriate update process rather than requesting a new number. The department’s dated guidance is the authoritative starting point.
The useful details.
- Check whether you already hold a number.
- Ask whether the Jobsplus engagement route applies.
- Keep registration and employment references together.
