Simar Nature Reserve: listen as well as look

Expect a different wetland view

Simar is a BirdLife Malta reserve in the Xemxija area, known for the habitat provided by its reedbeds and water. Not every bird will be visible in the open. Approach the visit as an opportunity to observe habitat and behaviour rather than a guaranteed display. Confirm current openings before travelling, particularly outside ordinary visiting periods.

Settle into the viewing space

Take time to listen and let movement in the reeds draw your attention. Binoculars can help, but patience matters more than a long lens. Keep conversations quiet and follow the staff’s advice about where visitors should go. Do not use playback, food or repeated approaches to make wildlife reveal itself for a photograph.

Give the outing a gentle finish

A nearby seafront or town pause can complement the reserve without turning the day into a series of hurried nature stops. If travelling with children, agree on a short observation challenge and then let interest determine how long you stay. Keep the visit within permitted areas and take all litter away. Wildlife reports can help you learn, but they are not reservations for a particular species on your date.
