Choose observation over activity

Għadira ta’ San Raflu is a small pond associated with the countryside near Kerċem and the western side of Gozo. Its interest lies in the contrast between freshwater, rural ground and the wider coastal landscape. Approach it as a place to observe rather than a recreation lake. Keep dogs controlled and avoid putting food or objects into the water.

Make the route explicit

Identify the public approach and the route back before leaving the village. Rural roads, paths and field entrances can look similar when viewed from a distance. Carry water for yourself and choose footwear for uneven ground. If you are visiting with children, make a clear boundary around the water and do not rely on a photograph to judge banks or depth.

Leave room for a quiet finish

A short visit can fit naturally with Kerċem or the surrounding countryside without becoming a full western-island hike. Keep noise low and give animals space, particularly when using binoculars or a camera. Check current access locally if the approach is unclear. Seasonal water and wildlife can change, so appreciate what is present rather than arriving with a checklist of species you expect to find.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

The useful details.
