Public libraries: books, study and a local connection

How visitors and new residents can use Malta Libraries, with a clear distinction between public lending and heritage collections.

Start with the right service

Malta Libraries manages public libraries across Malta and Gozo as well as the National Library. For borrowing a novel, finding children's books or using a public computer, start with the public-library network. For a historical research visit, investigate the National Library separately: a reading-room collection and an ordinary lending shelf serve different purposes. The official service page says membership is available to residents and short-term visitors. This is useful for a longer holiday as well as a move, but it does not mean every applicant can use the same online form. Check the registration route before making a special journey.

Register before building a routine

The government membership page distinguishes holders of a Maltese identity card or residence document from other applicants. The former can use online enrolment or register at a public library; other foreign nationals are directed to customer care to begin registration. Parents should check the junior-member requirements before taking children to collect a card. Members can borrow books, eBooks and audiovisual material, use reference collections and access the public internet and computer services described by Malta Libraries. The catalogue also supports reservations and renewals. Read the current borrowing conditions rather than assuming that a renewal is automatic or that every title is available digitally.

Make a useful first visit

Choose a branch convenient to your normal bus journey, then confirm its own timetable. A small village library is not necessarily open whenever a neighbouring shop is. Bring the identification requested by the registration team, and ask staff to explain the catalogue, collection point and return procedure. If you need a quiet place to work, enquire about seating and computer availability rather than treating the library as a reserved coworking desk. Families can ask about age-appropriate collections and advertised activities. Before leaving Malta, return physical loans and settle any outstanding membership questions; keeping an online account does not replace returning a borrowed book. Save the customer-care contact and your membership details privately for future enquiries.
