Choose the account’s purpose

Decide whether the account is for salary payments, everyday spending, saving or a different need before comparing providers. The Malta Financial Services Authority explains different account types and provides consumer information about opening, switching and closing accounts. Compare the actual features and fee information, including cards, transfers, cash access and any minimum balance. A bank’s current terms matter more than a broad claim that an account is free.

Prepare the bank’s requested evidence

MFSA’s opening-account guidance identifies documents banks commonly ask for, including identification, address verification and occupation information. Each bank has its own requirements and can request additional due-diligence information. Ask the chosen provider for its current checklist and appointment process so you know which originals or copies to bring. Keep explanations of income and the intended account use clear and consistent. An initial online enquiry is not a guarantee that an account has been approved.

Plan for the transition

Ask how you will receive the card, activate access and handle payments while the application is processed. Retain the fee document and read any restrictions before transferring ordinary banking arrangements. MFSA also provides information on payment accounts with basic features and a fees-comparison tool; use those resources to understand options rather than assuming a particular account is available to everyone. Keep banking credentials private and contact the provider through verified channels for application questions.
