Majjistral: walk through a protected working landscape

Coast, garrigue and rural heritage deserve a route that respects conservation and the people using the land.

Understand why the park exists

Majjistral Nature and History Park is a protected landscape on Malta’s north-western coast, managed for habitat and rural heritage conservation. Open views are only one part of it. Rubble walls, low vegetation and restored areas all contribute to the place. Begin with current park guidance and an established route rather than using a satellite image as permission to walk anywhere.

Keep the ground intact

Stay on paths through vegetation and avoid climbing walls, entering structures or crossing cultivated plots. Small plants and apparently bare ground can be important parts of the habitat. Carry water and prepare for exposure, since a coastal park is not necessarily a shaded one. If you want interpretation, enquire about a guided visit directly rather than assuming a recurring event still runs.

Choose a route you can finish

Set a clear distance or turning point and keep enough daylight for the return. The coast’s visual appeal should not draw you towards unstable-looking edges or an unfamiliar descent. A nearby bay or village can provide a practical start or finish, but it should not turn into an unplanned cross-country shortcut. Respect closures and the conservation purpose behind them.
