Identify who can issue a replacement
If a passport is lost or stolen, contact your national embassy, consulate or the issuing authority’s official emergency-document service. Malta’s Identità guidance distinguishes Maltese passport replacements from limited emergency travel-document arrangements for foreign nationals. Those routes depend on individual circumstances and representation, so do not assume a visitor can simply obtain an ordinary Maltese replacement. Record what the relevant authority asks you to do before changing an itinerary.
Gather the useful details
Prepare identity information, a copy of the missing passport if available, travel bookings and the circumstances of the loss. Follow the authority’s instructions about a police report and retain the proper reference or signed document required for the application. A lost-property enquiry and an official travel-document application are separate processes. If other items disappeared too, make a short list so banking, phone access and accommodation needs can be dealt with without losing track of the passport task.
Check the onward journey
Ask the airline and any transit country about the document that will actually be issued, as an emergency document may have route or validity restrictions. Do not buy a new ticket based only on the expected processing time. If the original passport is found later, ask the issuing authority whether it remains usable; a document reported lost may have been cancelled. Keep application references together and leave enough time to collect the replacement and reach the correct departure point.
