Healthcare in Malta: find the service and confirm the entitlement

Find the responsible service

Malta’s Primary HealthCare department publishes a health-centre directory organised by the localities each centre serves. It includes general-practitioner and nursing services alongside specialist clinics, with the availability of particular clinics handled separately. Begin with your address and the official centre information rather than selecting a building merely because it looks closest on a map. If the appropriate service or booking route is unclear, use the department’s Client Support contact. A general building opening does not mean every clinic or professional is available at that moment.

Visitors: check the basis for access

For eligible temporary visitors, the European Commission explains how the European Health Insurance Card applies to medically necessary state-provided healthcare under the host country’s conditions. It is not the same as private care or travel insurance, and it does not guarantee that every service is free. Read the Commission’s Malta-specific information and confirm any entitlement question with the named competent institution. Do not assume a short holiday arrangement establishes continuing cover when moving your habitual residence, or that a privately booked appointment will be reimbursed simply because you hold a card.

Prepare the administrative information

Keep relevant entitlement documents, identification and the contact details of your insurer or home institution available. If arranging continuing care, ask the appropriate professionals what information should be transferred and how the receiving service handles appointments; do not rely on a travel guide to reconcile clinical records. Ask the provider whether it is offering a state or private service and how charges or documentation are handled before a non-urgent booking. Keep receipts and confirmations where reimbursement or an insurance claim may later require them.

Use the guide for navigation

The useful questions are practical: which service covers this address, whether an appointment or referral is required, what documentation to bring and who answers entitlement questions. The answers can differ between visitors and residents, so describe your circumstances accurately when asking. This guide does not assess symptoms, recommend treatment or determine eligibility. If someone needs urgent medical attention, seek appropriate assistance rather than waiting for an administrative enquiry. For future routine needs, save the current official service link and support route so the next contact starts from a known source instead of an old directory entry.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

The useful details.

  • Use the official centre directory for your locality.
  • Check visitor or resident entitlement separately from finding a clinic.
  • Confirm the specific appointment and documentation with the provider.
