Foresta2000: see a growing woodland landscape

A reforestation site is best enjoyed on its existing paths, with attention to the work behind the landscape.

Understand the restoration story

Foresta2000 is an afforestation project near Mellieħa managed as part of BirdLife Malta’s reserve network. Its interest is not a promise of a dense, shaded forest at every turn, but the gradual development of a habitat. Read the current visitor guidance and use the established entrances rather than approaching across neighbouring land.

Walk with the planting in mind

Stay on paths and avoid trampling young vegetation to find a photograph or a quieter picnic spot. Notice differences in trees, shrubs and open ground, and let children look closely without collecting leaves or insects. Carry water and assess shade for the actual route rather than assuming the word woodland guarantees relief from heat.

Choose an appropriate length

Plan a turning point that suits your group and keep enough time for the walk back. Mellieħa or the bay can provide a useful second anchor, but check the route between them instead of estimating it from an overview map. Follow any access restrictions related to maintenance or conservation. A short, observant visit is a meaningful way to appreciate a restoration project without trying to cover all of it.
