Appreciate the landscape from above
Fomm ir-Riħ forms part of Malta’s north-western sequence of bays and steep coastal landscapes. The scenery can be rewarding without a beach descent. Start by identifying an established public viewpoint or route and deciding whether it suits your group. Do not assume that a bay visible below has an easy, maintained or currently open access path.
Make the descent a separate decision
Check the actual route and local restrictions before committing to the shore. Footwear, carrying capacity and the climb back matter more than the straight-line distance. If the approach is unclear, keep the visit on higher public ground or choose another beach. An unmarked track, a social-media route or the footsteps of strangers is not enough information.
Keep the day geographically simple
A Baħrija-area pause can provide the practical companion to a coastal view. Avoid combining several descents simply because the map puts the bays near each other. Bring water, leave fields and walls untouched and arrange a reliable return. The conservation value of the coast includes its slopes and vegetation, so stay on established routes and do not create shortcuts for a photograph.
The useful details.
