A family science day at Esplora: exhibits first, one show second

Build a visit around curiosity and a suitable programme instead of trying every activity.

Choose the questions before the timetable

Esplora at Bighi in Kalkara combines interactive exhibitions, workshops, science shows and a planetarium. It occupies a group of historic buildings and outdoor spaces above the Grand Harbour, giving the visit several different settings. Ask the children which subjects interest them, then choose a few exhibits to explore without rushing. The aim is not to operate every interactive in the building. A child who spends time trying, changing an idea and explaining what happened may gain more than one who moves constantly to the next station.

Select one programme item deliberately

Use the centre’s current weekly schedule to choose a science show or planetarium session that suits the children’s age, language and attention span. A full-dome film and a live presenter-led session can feel quite different. Check ticket inclusions and any separate booking requirements for the selected activity rather than assuming ordinary entry covers every programme element. Keep the arrival time comfortably ahead of the session so finding reception and settling in do not become a race. Share the chosen plan with the children, including where the break will come.

Plan comfort and access

Read the facilities and access information where a pushchair, mobility aid or sensory requirement affects the visit. Esplora describes lifts and arrival arrangements, and invites advance contact about specific needs. The café and rest opportunities should be part of the plan, not an afterthought when everyone becomes tired. Check practical food arrangements directly if important to your family. Keep the outdoor part responsive to the weather; a centre with substantial indoor exhibitions can still involve moving between spaces and spending time outside. Choose a shorter route when that improves the day.

Finish while curiosity remains

After the selected show, return to a favourite area or let the children explain one discovery instead of adding another timed session automatically. Keep a small record of a question to explore later, rather than trying to turn the outing into an examination. Arrange the return journey and pickup point before you leave the centre. This is a suggested family approach, not an official tour length or a promise of a particular show. Read the current programme again close to the visit and use the operator’s direct answers for suitability, access and booking details.
