Begin with a practical goal
The public learning offer includes digital skills through Jobsplus and the Directorate for Lifelong Learning and Employability. Choose a specific outcome: using online services, preparing documents, managing spreadsheets or understanding a professional software requirement. These need different starting levels. A course labelled digital skills may be appropriate for a beginner, while an advanced documents or financial-spreadsheets course assumes foundations you should check before applying.
Compare the learning format
Lifelong Learning lists classroom, live online and self-paced options, including named ICDL-related subjects in its current programme. Check whether the course requires a particular device, software access or attendance at a centre. A self-paced course still has completion arrangements and may depend on enrolment numbers. Jobsplus also publishes course information and support schemes; read the eligibility conditions for the actual offer instead of assuming every applicant receives the same funded place.
Bring the course into everyday use
Choose a small real task to practise between sessions, such as a household spreadsheet or a formatted letter. Keep personal banking and government credentials out of shared classroom exercises. Ask what assessment, certificate or evidence of attendance is provided if the course is intended for employment. Before paying, compare the timetable with your working week and the actual teaching location. A useful course makes a particular task easier rather than simply adding another qualification title to a list.
