Use the veterinary route first
Malta’s pet-entry process is handled through veterinary authorities, and the official service includes a pre-notification of arrival. Requirements depend on the animal, origin and type of movement. Read the current instructions for the actual journey before purchasing transport. A pet passport alone should not be treated as proof that every requirement is complete. Ask your vet to work through the official requirements and timing with you, particularly when travelling from outside the EU.
Connect the documents to the journey
The arrival-notification form asks for details including the port, flight or vessel, arrival time, country of origin, accompanying person and address in Malta. Keep those details consistent with the travel booking and veterinary records. If an itinerary changes, ask how the notification should be updated. Separately, obtain the airline or ferry’s rules for carriers, size, cabin or hold transport and booking capacity; official entry compliance does not reserve an animal’s place on a service.
Prepare for the first days
Book accommodation that explicitly accepts the animal and ask about any practical conditions. Identify a local veterinary contact and carry familiar food and essential records in the way advised by the vet and carrier. Retain the notification copy and confirmation for the journey. For commercial movements or unusual circumstances, use the authority’s specific guidance rather than adapting ordinary holiday-pet advice. A complete plan connects the animal’s documents with a workable arrival and place to stay.
The useful details.
- Read the rules for the actual origin and species.
