Eating vegetarian in Malta: read the whole dish

Find a satisfying meal by checking stocks, sauces and the restaurant’s actual menu.

Start with the restaurant’s own list

A menu with one vegetarian symbol is a starting point, not a full picture of dinner. Look for several dishes you would actually enjoy and check whether the current menu differs from photographs online. Malta has restaurants ranging from local kitchens to international and hotel dining rooms; choose by the food and journey that suit you rather than assuming one type of venue always offers better vegetarian choices.

Ask the questions that matter to you

Explain whether you eat dairy and eggs, and ask about stocks, sauces, cheese and garnishes when those ingredients affect your choice. A vegetable soup or pasta can have a preparation that is not apparent from its name. If dining with others, agree how sharing dishes will work. Do not treat vegetarian suitability as a guarantee about allergens: these are separate conversations, particularly when a dish is adapted in a busy kitchen.

Make a small shortlist

For a longer stay, identify one dependable lunch option near your base, a more elaborate dinner and a supermarket alternative. Josephine’s at Corinthia Palace advertises a plant-based menu, while U Bistrot publishes a vegan menu; confirm the actual selection before travelling across the island. Keep the meal flexible if an ingredient is unavailable, and ask about substitutions before the order reaches the kitchen. A clear conversation usually produces a better result than relying on an old recommendation.
