Choose a craft that interests you

The Directorate for Lifelong Learning lists creative subjects including Maltese bobbin lace, ganutell, gold embroidery and Maltese hand-painted lettering known as tberfil. Each involves different materials and skills. Look at the actual course description and examples before choosing: delicate thread work, decorative flower making and painted lettering are not interchangeable versions of the same workshop. A sustained course offers time to practise, while a short introductory session may suit a brief stay better.

Check the teaching arrangement

Ask about the level, venue, teaching language and whether tools or materials are included. Some crafts require specialist equipment that is inconvenient to carry between a hotel and classroom. Confirm whether you will work on one project throughout the term and whether home practice is expected. If you are new to the craft, a beginner course with a clear project can be more satisfying than joining an advanced group simply because its timetable fits.

Connect the making with the tradition

UNESCO’s Malta inventory material identifies several local craft practices, including lace and gold embroidery. Use that context to ask the tutor how the technique is used today rather than treating it only as a historical curiosity. Keep notes on materials and suppliers if you want to continue after the course. A handmade first piece does not need to look like a shop display; understanding the work and developing a repeatable technique are worthwhile outcomes in themselves.
