New to Malta with children: organise the school enquiry

Use the correct registration route while preparing for the child’s first weeks, not only the application.

Start with address, age and school stage

The government service page for admission into Maltese state schools distinguishes same-locality, out-of-locality and middle or secondary registration routes, and directs third-country-national applications to the International Learners Directorate. Read the current page for the child’s circumstances before sending forms to several different schools. Your intended residential address and the child’s stage of education are useful starting details, but they do not replace the authority’s assessment. Keep a list of questions about the appropriate school, current application process and expected next contact.

Prepare the records the authority requests

Ask for the current document checklist, including any translation or verification arrangements, rather than assembling it from an old parent forum. Have the child’s existing education information organised so the school can understand prior learning, languages and support needs. Share documents only through the verified official route. Keep copies of submissions and the acknowledgement or reference returned. A housing arrangement, a school enquiry and a confirmed place are different steps; do not treat an informal conversation with a school as completion of registration.

Ask about learning and daily support

The International Learners Directorate describes support for newly arrived learners, including language-focused induction arrangements. Ask how the individual child’s transition is handled, what information the school needs and whom parents should contact about support. Discuss school-day practicalities separately: arrival and collection, meals, uniform or materials, transport and any after-school provision. The Education One Stop Shop links a range of services, including school transport and Foundation for Educational Services programmes. Each programme can have its own application and conditions, so make a separate note rather than assuming school registration includes everything.

Build the first-week plan

Once the official route and placement are confirmed, prepare the journey and agree an identifiable collection arrangement. Keep the school’s communication channels and named contacts available to everyone responsible for the child. Ask how absence, changes in collection or an adjustment difficulty should be reported. Leave space for the child to learn the routines instead of filling every afternoon with additional activities immediately. This guide is an administrative starting point, not a promise of admission, a particular school or a support outcome. Current instructions from the school, college network and International Learners Directorate should determine the actual next steps.
