Recognise the different forms

L-Għana is Malta’s rhymed folksong tradition, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. It includes improvised exchanges, narrative songs and a distinctive highly ornamented form associated with Bormla. The best-known quick-wit style involves singers responding to one another, supported by guitar playing. Even without understanding every Maltese word, a listener can follow changes in delivery, the musical interludes and the audience’s response. It is a living social practice rather than simply background music for a restaurant.

Find a real performance

Start with cultural organisers’ current programmes and look for għana specifically. The tradition appears in public celebrations as well as smaller community settings. UNESCO’s inventory documents its connection with village clubs, bars and celebrations such as Imnarja. That history helps explain the setting but does not guarantee a performance on a particular visit. Ask the organiser who is performing, what form to expect and whether there is an introduction for people unfamiliar with the tradition.

Listen before reaching for the camera

Arrive ready to observe the exchange and allow the performers and regular audience to establish the rhythm. If attending a small community session, ask about photographs or recordings rather than assuming a public-looking space means everyone wants to be filmed. An introductory recording from UNESCO can provide a useful preview. Afterwards, look up unfamiliar words or ask about a memorable phrase; language and shared experience are central to why this music matters.
