Days one and two: the capital and old capital
Begin with Valletta and let one major interior, the streets and harbour views occupy the first day. Use the second for Mdina and Rabat, choosing an archaeology or museum visit according to your interests. Keep meal times relaxed and make any coastal extension optional. This gives you two distinct introductions without spending both days moving between distant places. If an attraction is closed on your chosen day, switch the order instead of replacing the missing interior with several hurried alternatives.
Days three and four: stay for Gozo
Allow a proper transfer to Gozo and consider an overnight stay. Use the first island day for Victoria and the Citadel, adding one further stop if the journey and your arrival time allow it. On the next day, choose either a western-coast focus around Dwejra or an eastern pairing such as Xagħra’s archaeology and Ramla. Do not attempt both sides merely to complete a list. Check your ferry and onward connections before the return, and leave a generous margin if you have a fixed appointment later.
Day five: keep a flexible finish
Choose the remaining day according to weather and interests: a southern heritage visit, a long lunch in a village or a beach afternoon. Comino is an alternative full outing with its own boat and visitor-slot arrangements, not an automatic extra after Gozo. If this is departure day, shorten the plan and stay within a comfortable journey of your accommodation and airport transfer. These are suggested groupings rather than a guaranteed schedule. Reserve the essential pieces, allow time for the unexpected and make fewer stops when a place deserves longer.
